Sainsbury’s have launched a mobile Scan & Go app, which like Wal-Mart’s Scan & Go, allows you to scan the shopping on the phone, pack your purchases as you go and keep a running total of exactly how much you’ve spent and how much you’ve saved.
When you’ve finished shopping, you can pay through our dedicated area in store; either paying on your mobile then collecting a receipt or paying in the normal way through a Self Check out. Mobile Scan and Go can only be used in the trial stores: Tadley Superstore, Hampshire; London Colney Superstore, Hertfordshire; and Leicester North, Leicestershire.
This year several other UK grocers continue to roll out or expand their scan & go technology:
- Tesco: Tesco expanded its scan-as-you-shop technology to more stores in 2014. The system, which had been progressively introduced in previous years, saw wider adoption, including more locations across the UK. This technology allowed customers to use handheld scanners or mobile apps to scan items as they shopped and then pay at self-checkouts.
- Co-op Food: The Co-op Food chain expanded its scan & go system in 2014, building on its earlier pilots. The system allowed customers to scan items with handheld scanners or mobile apps as they shopped, aiming to streamline the checkout process and enhance efficiency.
- Morrisons: Morrisons trialed a scan & go system in a few locations starting in 2014. The pilot program allowed customers to use handheld scanners to track and pay for their purchases, providing a more efficient shopping experience.
These examples demonstrate the growing trend among UK retailers to implement and expand scan & go technology, focusing on improving customer convenience and reducing checkout times.
