Depop is now using generative AI and image recognition to assist sellers in creating product descriptions. Announced on September 12, this new feature allows users to upload a photo, and a product description generator provides details such as color, category, relevant hashtags, and brand.
The generator is designed to match the casual tone of Depop’s community and is available in English-speaking countries.
Easier Selling with AI
Depop’s generative AI aims to streamline the selling process. The company tested this tool with sellers before its site-wide launch. According to Rafe Colburn, Depop’s chief product and technology officer, nearly half of the sellers used it during testing.
“We know writing descriptions can be time-consuming,” Colburn said. “By adding automated descriptions, our community can list, sell, and earn more, while supporting a circular fashion economy.”
Previous AI Features on Depop
Depop has already implemented AI-driven features, such as predictive recommendations and pricing suggestions for sellers. For buyers, the platform improved search and personalization tools to enhance the shopping experience.
AI in Resale Platforms
Depop is not alone in using AI for product listings. eBay introduced its “magical listing tool” to help sellers write descriptions based on images. It also added a photo background enhancement feature earlier this year.
Similarly, Amazon launched its AI-driven product description tool, while Google’s Product Studio allows sellers to edit product images by removing or enhancing backgrounds using generative AI. These innovations reflect a growing trend in the use of AI across the resale and e-commerce sectors.
