As stores look to drive staff costs down, customer self service applications have gained popularity.  They have also been useful reference points for store staff who want to access more information about the full-range including items that might not be stocked in the store but can be delivered there the next day. Innovation in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies have made it possible for customers to visualise what high cost items such as a cars and furniture will look like when they are customised to the customer's favourite fabrics, colouring and trims. NFC technology has enabled interactions with physical items within the store, often used by the customer to get more information about a paticular product on their phone. Advances in digital displays and touch-screen have made for some interesting evolutions in the design of the vending machine.
